"Daaaad?"
"Yes son?"
"Um, ah, you know Eddie just got a dog . . ."
(Knowing what's coming next) "And?"
"I was wondering if it's okay if we get a dog."
"Well, maybe. If we get a dog, there'll have to be some rules."
"Okay . . . ?"
"First rule! The dog is your dog. Not mom's, not mine not your sisters. Do you understand?
"Yeah."
"Second, the dog is your responsibility. That means you clean up his business out in the yard. You take him on walks. You feed him every day. Do you understand that?"
"Yes, dad."
"You train him. I won't have a misbehaving dog in this house. If we have to take him to dog school to make sure he's well behaved, you have to do that too. You understand?"
"Yes."
"And finally, you will pay for his food, vet bills, license, dog training school, or any other expenses that comes up. Do you agree to that?"
"Yes, dad."
"Good! What kind of dog do you want?"
"Really? I can get a dog? Any kind of dog?"
The discussion about size and breed will occur here, so we won't go into it. But his son gets his dog and dad is going to deduct all the costs of keeping the dog. Whether it's a Chihuahua or a German Shepherd, Dad's business will deduct all the costs of ownership.
And that goes for his daughter's hamster, or the family parakeet, Guinea pig, cat, rabbit or any other animal the kids dream up.
Dad knows that every penny of his son's dog care will become a deduction for his small business. And not just pets, but clothes, sports, music, birthday parties and college savings will all be deducted off his business income.
